May: Free E-books

I was glad to explore these different e-book sites. I've been on Project Gutenberg's site before- I actually used it a few years back in my attempt to finish Pride and Prejudice. Unfortunately, reading books on the computer just doesn't do it for me, so I gave up and bought a 99 cent copy at a used book store. For those who have more patience for reading from a computer screen, I think sites like these are great tools. I would certainly recommend them to someone with a Kindle or Sony Reader. I just don't think it's for everyone. Most readers get some pleasure out of the feel of the book in their hands and the smell of the pages. It's a tactile thing, a sensory thing. I know for me, just the smell of old, dusty books brings back so many memories from different points in my life. Until the next generation comes of age, the generation with no emotional attachment to the physical part of a book, I don't know that e-books will take off. I do think that digital audio books will bare the brunt of the demand, though. More people already listen to or are familiar with books on cassette or c.d.
